Google is testing a new blue checkmark system, what does it consist of?

Some people may have noticed a change in Google results. For a handful of companies, a blue checkmark appeared to prove that the associated link is certified by the Californian firm.

If you use social network X, you should definitely know what the blue check mark means. In the past, it indicated certified accounts (before representing accounts associated with a Premium subscription). Based on the historical system of the network currently in the hands of Elon Musk, Google is testing a new verification functionality. As reported by The Verge, certified companies like Amazon, Apple, Epic Games, HP, Meta and Microsoft display this blue check mark.

This symbol aims to reassure Internet users by confirming that the site corresponds to the identity displayed. In short, this adds additional protection against scams, avoiding fraudulent links and keeping you on guard against phishing attempts. This experiment seems to be part of the approach of the “Brand Indicators for Message Identification” (BIMI) system implemented in Gmail. As is often the case, this system is tested with a small group of users. We were not able to see this on our side. However, the screenshot below shows the message displayed when hovering the cursor over the icon. It says that this verification checkmark suggests that the company is who it claims to be.
