The arrival of iOS 18, iPadOS 18 and macOS Sequoia brings official support for wired Xbox controllers. This allows gamers to upgrade to wired controllers which have low latency.
Apple added support for wired Xbox controllers to its devices with the release of the iOS 18 app, iPadOS 18, and macOS Sequoia. This means that owners of a wired Xbox controller can now use their controller to play games by simply plugging it into their iPhone, iPad, or Mac.
Apple’s new version of the Xbox controller typically adds native support for gaming console controllers to its devices. Although it sometimes takes a while, like in the case of the Xbox Elite 2 controller which took a year, support eventually arrives. However, while Xbox Wireless Controllers as well as wired and wireless PlayStation Controllers were already supported, support for wired Xbox Controllers has just been added.
Apparently the reason this is a big deal is because Xbox uses a custom USB protocol for its controllers, called GIP, while other controllers use the USB-HID standard. This means that Apple should have worked with Microsoft/Xbox to add support for the protocol so that its wired controllers can now work seamlessly.
The process of connecting a wired Xbox controller should be simple. Simply plug it into the device using a USB-C to USB-C cable if your device has a USB-C port. For devices like iPhone 14 and older models that have a Lightning port, you’ll need a Lightning to USB-C adapter to connect the controller’s USB-C cable.
