Meteorites: why the shower of shooting stars expected tonight could be exceptional

LThe Eta Aquarids are a Very active meteor shower that produces up to 50 meteors per hour. Already present in the sky in May 2023, they are observable again these days, reports La Voix du Nord.

When is the phenomenon observable at its maximum?

The phenomenon began on April 19 and is scheduled to continue until May 28. Due to the new moon scheduled for May 8, the light conditions are particularly suitable for May 5 and 6 when the sky is particularly dark and therefore ideal for observing shooting stars. The ideal time to observe them is between midnight and three in the morning.

How to observe them?

No need for binoculars or other devices, but it is advisable to move away from light pollution and therefore from cities to see them. And they should be particularly present when looking at the horizon towards the southeast and particularly towards the constellation Aquarius.

Why could this year be exceptional for observing shooting stars?

Scientists predict this year could be exceptional. A study published in Astronomy & Astrophysics suggests that the Eta Aquarids meteor shower of 2024 could be one of the most powerful of the century, according to an American study, relayed by Science and Life.
