It has been one of the flagship exclusives for Xbox and PC since its release in 2018. Sea of Thieves has taken up residence on PS5 in order to enlist new sailors.
It is no longer a game reserved for Xbox and PC players only. The sea pirates of Sea of Thieves can now attack their counterparts on PS5. Since Microsoft’s surprise announcement to sell some of its leading titles to the Playstation 5 and the Nintendo Switch, we have been waiting to see if everything would be as simple as promised to attract new players and expand its crew by more than 40 million sailors conquered in six years.
The PS5 version is the same as on Xbox and PC. Sea of Thieves offers a vast world map to explore to battle other ships, customize your own, and collect and sell treasure.
Crossplay available
Since April 30, Sea of Thieves is therefore going to conquer new horizons on the competing console without changing its recipe for success. It will be possible to play with players from other platforms in multiplayer (crossplay), by joining a game (up to 24 players online) or by inviting Xbox and PSN contacts via your friends list.
But you can also choose to only play between console players playing with the controller or to accept PC players acting with the keyboard-mouse combo, therefore more responsive in clashes. You can choose your opponents via the CrossPlay menu or by filtering matchmaking preferences. To play between PS5 players only, deactivate the “allow cross-platform play” option or choose to face players on the controller only.
However, you will need to have a PS Plus subscription to play multiplayer. Otherwise you will sail solo in the Calm Seas world alone. It is a game mode that can accommodate several players in multiplayer or a single player, but still requires a connection. It includes the majority of game content, excluding content related to player versus player features and modes.
An essential Microsoft account
If you have already played on PC or Xbox and decide to change support, don’t worry. The game can be transferred to the PS5 with the trophies obtained (which will be converted into PS5 trophies) and all saves. Only a few small items specific to limited launch editions on Xbox or PC will not be able to follow their owner (cosmetic items from Duke’s ship for example).
To be able to launch the game, something quite paradoxical, Playstation players will have to create a Microsoft account to access Sea of Thieves. This is how old pirates can recover their part and new ones can join the community of the seas.
