GNOME 47 “Denver” available: what’s new

The GNOME Project has just announced the release of GNOME 47, a release dubbed “Denver” that brings support for customizable accent colors, improved compatibility with small screens, persistent remote sessions, and new dialog windows. GNOME 47 introduces support for hardware encoding on Intel and AMD GPUs when recording screens.

CLike many other core applications, Files has been improved and is now also used for file open and save dialogs.

The web browser, GNOME Web, has received a number of new features, which bring it a little closer to Safari, with which it shares the next-generation open source Webkit engine.

  • Auto-fill forms : A new autofill feature lets you automatically complete forms based on your previous responses. This feature can be enabled in Privacy Preferences, where you can set what information is automatically provided, such as name, address, and contact information.
  • Favorites redesigned :Web now has a new sidebar for favorites, providing an improved experience for browsing and searching your favorites.
  • Privacy Reports : A new Privacy Report feature has been added, displaying the number of trackers blocked by GNOME Web. Making this previously hidden information accessible allows you to stay informed about your online privacy.

GNOME 47 will be available soon in many distributions, such as Fedora 41 and Ubuntu 24.10. GNOME also provides its own installation images for debugging and testing new features. These images are designed to be installed in a virtual machine and require GNOME Boxes with UEFI support.

Next up? GNOME 48, scheduled for GNOME Asia 2024 in Bengaluru, India, in March 2025.
