After complaining of feeling unwell while visiting a restaurant in Trevignano, Sammy Basso died last Saturday. The Italian was the oldest known progeria patient and was considered a medical miracle.

At 28 years old, he more than doubled the average life expectancy of those affected. Those affected usually die in adolescence, often due to heart attacks or strokes.

Sammy Basso: Fighting progeria

His illness, also known as Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome, severely affected Sammy’s mobility throughout his life. Everyday activities such as running or jumping were difficult for him and he had to constantly be aware of his physical limits.

In addition to the physical challenges, Sammy also faced health issues. Progeria causes heart and muscle problems and joint pain that require regular doctor visits.

He had to be checked often to keep an eye on his health. These medical obligations placed a great strain on his everyday life.

Social interactions and studies

Despite these challenges, Sammy had an active social life. He enjoyed doing things with friends and doing theater, which he enjoyed.

His friends supported him in maintaining a positive attitude, even when reality was often challenging. “My friends always manage to make the glass feel at least half full – even if it is actually much emptier,” RTL quoted him as saying.

He completed his studies in molecular biology with honors. “We fought hard, but Sammy never gave up,” his mother Laura once said about Sammy Basso.

A legacy of struggle

Basso leaves a significant legacy in the world of medicine and in the hearts of many people. Research on progeria was further advanced through his efforts.

So he founded a network of scientists to promote exchanges about the disease. He also organized fundraising and awareness events.

As the Progeria Research Foundation explains, there is actually progress in the development of therapies. Sammy Basso will always be remembered as a symbol of the fight against the impossible.

Progeria is a genetic disease

Progeria is a very rare genetic disease that leads to an extremely accelerated aging process. Affected children show signs of premature aging in early childhood, which manifests themselves in physical and health limitations.

Hutchinson-Gilford syndrome, the form Bosso suffered from, has a prevalence of about 1 in 4 million. Symptoms include stunted growth, osteoporosis, joint problems and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease.
