The Italian returns to winning ways in the shot put at the Paralympics with her third career title, the first success for the discus thrower. Caironi silver in the long throw

Two more Italian victories in the throws at the Paris Paralympics where Italy, with one day to go, has six medals in athletics: three golds and three silvers. Assunta triumphs again in the shot put Woody to regain the title that had eluded her in Tokyo and signs the third success of her career in the specialty, after London and Rio, but it is also her second time on the podium at the Stade de France after the silver in the discus. The captain of the Paralympic National team leads from the beginning in the competition in the merged categories F11 and F12, achieving the best result of 14.54 in the fourth round in a series with four throws superior to those of her opponents: “I waited three years for this revenge and I don’t care about the measure, the important thing was to arrive in front. The silver in the discus was certainly a confidence boost. Throughout the year I worked to maintain the tension of both races, and it is also thanks to this that I managed to maintain concentration without being distracted by the noise of the stadium or by the desire to win gold”. With this medal she becomes the most successful Italian ever in athletics at the Paralympics. In second place was Uzbek Safiya Burkhanova (14.12) who had beaten the Italian in Japan, third was Chinese Zhao Yuping (12.21).

It is the first time on the top step of the podium for Oney TapiaParalympic champion in the F11 discus the previous morning: silver in Rio, double bronze in Tokyo (also in the shot put) and in Paris he finally rejoices with the 41.92 of the fifth throw that beats the 41.75 of the Iranian Hassan Bajoulvand. “In the shot put I suffered for the seventh place but we pulled ourselves together and today we took the victory that was missing. This is sport: you fall, you cry, you get up again and in the end you have fun. Unfortunately at the beginning I struggled because of the rain, but then I found the right measures. This gold is for my daughters who cried after the weigh-in and now they can rejoice with me, but it is also to inspire all young people, because in life everything is possible and they are the masters of their destiny”.

Bronze for the Spanish Alvaro del Amo Cano (39.15).

For the third consecutive edition Martina Caironi she takes the silver medal in the long jump T63. She does it with 5.06 (+0.2) on her fifth and penultimate attempt, in a challenge that until then had seen her out of the medal zone: “It was complicated because I wasn’t able to push and get into the race well from the first jump, but I was able to react almost driven by the strength of desperation. I tried to gather my energy, to bring out the grit, even if in reality I’m worth much more than five meters. A super important medal after having suffered so much from injuries this year”. In the end, the podium is the same as in Tokyo with the Australian Vanessa Low in front of everyone thanks to the 5.45 (-0.3) of the new world record T61 and the Swiss Elena Kratter in third place with 4.83 (0.0).

Ndiaga Dieng, fourth in Paris in the 1500 T20 after the bronze three years ago, almost gets a medal. With just a few meters to go, he loses his balance and crosses the finish line with 3:50.24 just before falling to the ground, very close to his Italian record, surpassed by the Portuguese Sandro Baessa (silver in 3:49.46) and the American Michael Brannigan (bronze in 3:49.91) while the gold goes to the British Ben Sandilands (3:45.40). Seventh place in the heat in the 100 T64 for Giuliana Chiara Filippi in 13.73 which is not enough for the young Italian to reach the final. Riccardo Bagaini is also eliminated in the 400 T47 with the tenth overall time in 49.97. On the long jump T64 Marco Cicchetti (T44) finished eighth, jumping 6.63 in the race for the fourth consecutive gold for the German Markus Rehm with 8.13. Valentina Petrillo did not pass the semifinals in the 200 T12 in 25.92 after the 25.95 of the battery. On the last day on the track Saturday the Italians Ambra Sabatini, Martina Caironi and Monica Contrafatto, protagonists in Tokyo of the hat-trick in the 100 T63, as well as Maxcel Amo Manu and Fabio Bottazzini in the 200 T64.
