Davis Cup: 5 years later, Nick Kyrgios’ big comeback with Australia

Nick Kyrgios has not played in the Davis Cup since 2019, but after almost six years of absence, he is expected to make his comeback in the first round of the 2025 edition, when Australia travels to Stockholm to to challenge Sweden on January 31 and February 1. Returning to competition after being hampered by injuries for the last two years, he was recalled by captain Lleyton Hewitt.

The Australian team will be led by Alex De Minaur, currently 9th in the ATP rankings, and Jordan Thompson, 27th. It seems unlikely that Kyrgios will be able to be fielded in singles, unless it is shown during the Australian Open that he is very far ahead in his recovery phase, but we can easily imagine him playing doubles with his great friend Thanasi Kokkinakis, with whom he won the title in Melbourne in 2022. Angry for a while with everyone in the country, including Lleyton Hewitt, the troublemaker has obviously put water in his wine.

De Minaur ravi

Nick Kyrgios made his comeback last week in Brisbane – after wrist surgery – where he lost in three tight sets (7-6, 6-7, 7-6) in the first round against Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard. The Australian also played the doubles in Brisbane, associated with Novak Djokovic: the duo was beaten in the quarter-finals by the No.1 seeds Nicolas Mektic and Michael Venus. At 29, the former world number 13 is starting almost from scratch. He used his protected ranking to enter the Australian Open, but felt it would be a “miracle” if he was competitive there.

The announced return of the Wimbledon finalist in 2022 seems in any case very well received by the other members of the team. “I can’t wait, I have no problem with having Nick on the team, it’s going to be great“, assured Alex de Minaur on Tuesday. “Nick is so talented, he addedso whether in singles or doubles, he is dangerous every time he enters the court. I hope he can be fit, I hope his wrist is okay“.
