In Auckland, Cameron Norrie, in difficulty throughout his match, lost his nerve at the end of the match. The Briton furiously threw his racket which ended up hitting a spectator.
Briton Cameron Norrie lost his nerve again. The 48th in the world missed an important blow when he was led 6-2 5-3 by Diaz Acosta at the ATP 250 in Auckland. To vent his anger, he threw his racket in frustration towards the stand. A gesture of annoyance which was not intended to affect a spectator. Fortunately, the latter sitting in the front row did not seem injured.
The referee only sanctioned the player with a simple warning for unsportsmanlike behavior. For comparison, at the 2020 US Open, 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic was eliminated by default in the fourth round after accidentally hitting a linesman in the throat with a ball.
Norrie s’excuse
“I didn’t intend to do this, but it’s still not ideal and I’ve never done anything like this”said Norrie, who represented New Zealand as a junior and previously lived in Auckland. The spectator laughed and I said “sorry, I didn’t mean to do that”. And she answered me “yes, it’s okay”. “It wasn’t serious. But as we’ve seen with other players, you can easily get caught out if you’re caught in the wrong place or you don’t look or something like that.” he explained.
