The drawing is pleasant: it represents four billionaires bringing their offerings in bags of dollars and the mouse Mickey prostrating himself in front of the statue of a commander who seems to be none other than Donald Trump. But it did not please the editor-in-chief of Washington Post who refused to publish it, provoking, on Friday January 4, the resounding resignation of its designer, Ann Telnaes, winner of a Pulitzer Prize and contributor to the newspaper since 2008.
The drawn characters are recognizable: Jeff Bezos, owner of the daily newspaper and founder of Amazon; Mark Zuckerberg, founding boss of Meta; Sam Altman, boss of Open AI and Patrick Soon-Shiong, editor of Los Angeles Timeswhile the mouse represents Disney, which agreed, to everyone's surprise, to pay 15 million dollars (14.5 million euros) to close a defamation complaint from Donald Trump. “The cartoon criticizes billionaire tech and media CEOs who have done their best to curry favor with the new president-elect. There have been many articles recently about these people who got lucrative government contracts and want to eliminate regulations and are going to Mar-a-Lago”deplores designer Ann Telnaes, who explains that this is the first time that a drawing has been refused for editorial reasons.
