Uruguayan striker Mathias Acuna, who played for Mushuc Runa in the Ecuadorian D1, died on Saturday at the age of 32. He would have committed suicide, according to the first elements of the investigation.
The Ecuadorian club, based in Ambato, confirmed this tragic news. The president of Mushuc Runa, Luis Chango, revealed to the Primicias website that the player committed suicide in a hotel in the town of Ambato, located about 100 kilometers from the capital Quito.

The Uruguayan Football Federation (AUF) expressed its “deep sadness” following the death of the player, sending its condolences to his family, teammates and friends, via a message on the social network X (formerly Twitter).

Mathias Acuna, who had spent most of his career in Uruguay, had just returned to Ecuador to prepare for the upcoming season. He joined Mushuc Runa last July after a spell at Greek club Lamia. The player, who was due to participate in the 2025 Copa Sudamericana, also faced accusations of mistreatment towards his former partner. In December, he revealed that he was under the control of an electronic bracelet as part of an ongoing investigation.
