LDU Quito defender Richard Mina was shot in the leg overnight from Saturday to Sunday while vacationing in his childhood neighborhood in Guayaquil, southwest Ecuador. The 25-year-old, a three-time national champion, is said to be in a stable condition in hospital.

The end of the vacation turned into a tragedy for Richard Mina. The Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito defender was seriously injured during the night from Saturday to Sunday. The 25-year-old central defender was shot in the leg while on a family vacation in Guayaquil, southwest Ecuador.

The incident reportedly occurred in the Cristo del Consuelo neighborhood, where he grew up. According to the local press, the 1.84m player was shot by mistake during an argument that did not concern him.

An investigation opened by the police

Treated urgently, he is said to be in stable condition in a clinic in the north of the city. “God protected him, it could have been much worse,” one of his friends told Ecuadorian media. The police have opened an investigation to identify the perpetrator of the shooting.

Three-time reigning Primera Categoria champion, once with Aucas (2022) and twice with LDU Quito (2023, 2024), Richard Mina has the reputation of being a reliable and uneventful player. He was due to return to training this week with his club in order to prepare for the 2025 season during a collective training course.
