David Savard must be a target for the team

With the arrival of Alexandre Carrier in Montreal, the departure of David Savard seems inevitable.

Many people expect to see him traded by the trade deadline and Kent Hughes will have to find a team that would be willing to offer his player’s services.

No rumor currently links Savard to a particular team, but we can say that the Kings have the ideal profile to welcome him.

This was precisely a topic of discussion during the last episode of The Eye Test of Sick Podcast.

During this episode, Pierre McGuire explained that the Kings could be the type of team to welcome Savard because they have a big need for right-handed defensemen in their lineup.

Los Angeles currently plays with four left-handed defensemen in its starting lineup. The only two right-handers are Brandt Clarke and Jordan Spence, who are very young to endure the work on that side.

We must not forget that Drew Doughty should return by the end of the season, he who is injured, but Savard could help this team find a little stability on the right with experience.

Savard would also bring a more physical side to the Kings defense. Jordan Spence is only 5’11 and he plays on a third pair which should provide a little more physical play.

We must not forget Marc Bergevin in the equation, he who is assistant general manager of the Kings. It was he who signed Savard in the summer of 2021.

Los Angeles also likes big-framed defenders like Savard. Joel Edmundsson is the best example, he is the tallest defender on the team at 6’5.

In the event of a transaction between the two teams, the Canadiens would certainly retain part of Savard’s salary, which represents $3.5 million on the payroll. There is only one salary retention space left for the Canadian, who risks taking advantage of it.

The Kings still have all their picks in 2025, except for the second round. They are able to offer something interesting to convince Kent Hughes.
