That morning, the weather was not good. The wind blows quite strongly; the first drops begin to fall. The feeling of freshness is amplified in the south spire of Saint-Corentin Cathedral in Quimper (Finistère).

However, these unfavorable conditions do not in any way disrupt Ewan L'Heveder. At the end of November 2024, the firefighter is carrying out an exercise with four teammates. They must descend nearly 70 m by abseiling.

Quimper Cathedral remains a special monument where we cannot tie our ropes just anywhere. For this, we work with the architect of Bâtiments de and we come to do an exercise there every two or three years.

Sergeant Ewan L'Heveder.

Passion for climbing

This took place a few days before thee Telethon. At the end of November, Quimper was one of the four ambassador cities. On this occasion, the Grimpeurs de l'Odet (GDO) climbing club organized abseiling descents from the cathedral.

Climbingit has been one of Ewan L'Heveder's passions since he was 20. For four seasons he was president of the GDO until 2020.

It is therefore no coincidence that this professional firefighter wanted to join the Reconnaissance and Intervention Group in Dangerous Environments (Climb). The number of personnel at the Quimper rescue center is 18. Ewan L'Heveder is one of the four unit leaders.

Delicate evacuations

Interventions are rarely harmless. Example: “Last June, we were called upon for a scooter accident on the Locronan road, just outside Quimper. The victim had fallen 6 to 7 meters below. It had to be reassembled,” says Ewan L’Heveder.

In Quimper, the Grimp firefighters carry out on average 40 interventions par an. Night and day on very different terrains. “It may involve evacuating people from their homes but the configuration of the premises makes the intervention delicate. Operations can take place at the foot of cliffs, at the top of lighthouses. » Or in one of the spiers of Quimper Cathedral.

The victims will always be in good hands.
