the new 4-team format made official!

A few weeks ago, we learned that the All-Star Game was perhaps going to be subject to a new modification, with the organization of a 4-team tournament. A format which has just been made official for the 2025 edition.

The loss of interest surrounding the All-Star Game and criticism from fans have (again) pushed Adam Silver to reconsider his plans for the All-Star Game. We say all-star match but we must speak in the plural from now on because there will now be several matches, within a mini tournament which will bring together all the All-Stars but also the players from the winning team of the Rising Stars Challenge.

#NBAAllStar Voting presented by AT&T will tip off on Thursday, Dec. 19 at 10 a.m. ET and conclude on Monday, Jan. 20 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Clearly, three teams of 8 All-Stars and the players from the Rising Star Challenge to be the fourth team. There will therefore be semi-finals before a grand final which will reward the best team. For each of these matches, the concept is simple, the first team to reach 40 points is declared the winner.

The three All-Star teams will be formed via a Draft between TNT consultants Shaquille O’Neal, Charles Barkley and Kenny Smith.

It remains to be seen whether this new format will improve the show a little. The All-Star Game is increasingly criticized by fans, and many decide to simply skip the event. If the format is to convince the fans, the players will also have to adhere to it. And given Kevin Durant’s reaction, it’s far from won.

I asked Kevin Durant what he thought about the new format for the NBA All-Star Game: “I hate it. Absolutely hate it. Terrible….We should just go back to East-West.” pic.twitter.com/T7owR5aJY7
