Red Bull driver Max Verstappen took pole position on the grid for the Austrian Grand Prix in 1.04.314, the Dutchman four tenths ahead of Lando Norris’ McLaren and five tenths ahead of George Russell’s Mercedes.

Behind, Carlos Sainz, Lewis Hamilton, Charles Leclerc, Oscar Piastri, Sergio Perez, Nico Hülkenberg and Esteban Ocon complete the top ten.

A very calm session

The drivers are very disciplined this weekend in Austria since no incidents have been reported for this qualifying session. It must be said that the addition of gravel traps at the last two corners to enforce track limits has calmed more than one person down. No one wants to take the risk of going to test the gravel…

An Alpine in Q3

This time, only one Alpine was able to reach Q3 in qualifying (unlike in Barcelona or the Sprint Qualifying where both Alpines entered Q3). It was Esteban Ocon who managed to climb into the top ten on the starting grid of the Austrian Grand Prix.

His teammate Pierre Gasly saw his time canceled in Q2 after exceeding track limits. The Norman will therefore have to start from thirteenth place this Sunday at the start of the race.

Verstappen breaks the mold

While the gaps were only a few thousandths since the start of the weekend, Max Verstappen managed to open a gap of more than four tenths with the McLaren of Lando Norris during this qualifying. His own teammate, Sergio Perez, even finds himself more than eight tenths behind… Note that McLaren driver Oscar Piastri saw his time canceled in Q3 for having exceeded the track limits, which explains his gap of seven tenths.

The Austrian Grand Prix – the eleventh round of the 2024 Formula 1 World Championship – will start this Sunday, June 30 at 3:00 p.m. (Paris time) and the race will be available to follow live on our website at this address.
