Before the draft, Cole Hutson said he wanted to do what his brother Lane couldn’t do: get drafted in the first round.

Ultimately, history has taught us that this is not what happened. The first 32 players to be selected did not include Cole Hutson, perhaps to his great misfortune.

The little defender, who looks like Lane Hutson, is therefore available for the future.

At this point, I don’t expect the Canadiens to pick him. After all, one more small left-handed defenseman is really not in the ballpark of what the Canadiens need, let’s be clear.

We should expect to see the club, which no longer has a second-round pick, continue to draft forwards who can play center on this second day of the draft, where the CH has eight speaking rights at the time of writing:

  • 70e
  • 78e
  • 102e
  • 130e
  • 134e
  • 166e
  • 201e
  • 224e

Will Hutson be drafted early in the second round? It depends if a club falls in love with him.

Note, moreover, that Corey Pronman does not place Hutson among the 20 best skaters who are still available. But all it takes is one club that falls in love with him – or is afraid of losing ANOTHER Hutson – and that can help him.

But it should also be noted that this is not the only aspect to note among the omissions yesterday. Once again, there was no goalie drafted in the first round, as is now the norm…

But the QMJHL, for a second year in a row, was ignored.

Maxim Massé is the only Q player nominated by the top 20 players remaining in Pronman’s rankings. He is ranked 17th and there is a fair chance, but not a certainty, that he has a chance in the second round.

To be continued from 11:30 a.m. this morning.
