1/7/24 – Art Market – London – Generally, we only talk about works for sale that we have been able to see in real life, without limiting ourselves to photographs. Exceptionally, we will write here about the London sales without having been able to go there this year, and therefore only from catalogs available on the internet and digital images which do not necessarily accurately reflect the works. However, it seems difficult to us to ignore these sales, especially since this time, London, whose sales had recently lost interest, seems to be offering more important works.

This is how at Christie’s, in the evening sale of paintings, we can see in particular a beautiful Viennese primitive, not far from Duccio, a Madonna and Child attributed to the Master of Monte Oliveto (ill. 1), conventional name coming from this convent where – in addition to the cycle of frescoes by Sodoma and Luca Signorelli (see the article – a Majesty given to the same anonymous artist. The work seems, if we are to believe the photo and the catalog notice, in very good condition and of remarkable quality, which justifies, in addition to its rarity, its fairly high estimate. It would hardly be surprising if it were acquired by a museum.

Still in the same sale, we will highlight a painting by Titian (ill. 2) with a prestigious provenance. It was in fact kept for a long time in Vienna in the Habsburg collections, before being plundered by Napoleonic troops and exhibited at the Sainte-Elisabeth church in…
