« All human activities are or will be impacted by climate change. Sport is no exception. Some impacts are already noticeable. You have to adapt to it. » Co-editor of the WWF study Climate change: the world of sport at +2°C and +4°CAurélie Bourgoin has extensively studied the impacts of the sporting environment on the climate… and vice versa. At the invitation of the CPIE Brenne-Berry and the Department, she is offering a conference on this theme, Wednesday November 27, 2024, at the Maison des sports in Châteauroux.
“It is not a question of incriminating anyone for the consequences that this or that sport can have on the climate, but rather of becoming aware together of the impacts and the means of adapting to them”, summarizes Aurélie Bourgoin. Consultant on issues of ecological transition in sport, she relies on climatic and scientific projections to define the major issues facing the sporting environment.
Certain issues seem more distant from the Indre, such as the consequences of rising water levels on the coasts or the lack of snow cover in the mountain ranges. But other impacts directly concern local, amateur and professional sports practices. “Rising temperatures and the frequency of heatwaves, for example, pose a health problem and have already had an impact on the maintenance of sporting events. There is also the problem of sports equipment: most halls and gymnasiums were built before the 1990s and are unsuitable for climate change; Regarding outdoor fields (for football, rugby, golf), there is the problem of watering during periods of drought. »
During the conference, representatives of the Department, the commune of Argenton and the Blanc outdoor base will testify about the adaptation of their practices. “Climate disruption is worrying. If we want to be able to contain it, we need an ambitious climate policy. But at their level, sports clubs also have a role to play because they are effective vectors of transmission and education in good behavior,” believes Aurélie Bourgoin.
