After New York City, Nice, Crystal Palace, and more recently Strasbourg, Patrick Viera will experience a new club as coach of a professional team. And he returned to Italy, where he had played as a player for Juve and Inter in particular.
“Genoa announces that it is entrusting the reins of the first team to Patrick Vieira,” said the Genoa team on Wednesday, 17th in the championship with only 2 victories and a single point ahead of the red zone. “Welcome, sir,” she concluded, as is customary in Italy for coaches. As expected, the former world champion succeeds Alberto Gilardino who was dismissed from office on Tuesday.

Since the start of the season, the ex-Arsenal midfielder has worked as a consultant on the DAZN channel, after being sacked from Strasbourg in July after a single disappointing season. The Alsatians finished in 13th place with their retention in Ligue 1 assured several days before the end of the championship, but also four defeats in the last five matches.
A half-fig, half-grape coach assessment
The club, owned by the BlueCo consortium which also owns Chelsea, then preferred to bank on the youth and ambition of the Englishman Liam Rosenior, pushing Patrick Vieira towards the exit just a few weeks before the resumption of Ligue 1. The latter also had other lackluster mandates at Nice (2018-20) and Crystal Palace (2021-2023), after starting on the bench at New York City (2015-18).
As a player, however, the midfielder has won almost everything, whether in the French team (World Cup-1998, Euro-2000, Confederations Cup 2001) but also in club with Arsenal (Cup-championship double in 1998 and 2002, season invincible Premier League in 2003-2004…) or with Inter between 2006 and 2010 (four Scudetti, a Cup and an Italian Super Cup).
