Held in check by Belgium (0-0) this Wednesday during the last match of Group E, the Ukrainians are officially eliminated from this Euro 2024. Hard to believe for Zinchenko’s teammates, who become the first nation in the history of the competition to be eliminated with four points.
Until the end, the ranking of this group E of the Euro will have been undecided. Until the end, the four nations involved believed in qualification for the round of 16. And finally, with the same number of points – four – it is Ukraine which will recover last place, synonymous with elimination from the competition.
Four points but last in the group, the sad reality of the Ukrainians
Unable to overthrow Belgium this Wednesday in Stuttgart (0-0), Oleksandr Zinchenko’s teammates knew they were in a slightly less favorable position than their Slovak or Romanian competitors, especially after the initial rout against the latter (0 -3) who undermined their goal average. At the same time, the draw between Slovakia and Romania (1-1) allowed both teams to validate their ticket for the 8th.
Ukraine officially became the first team in Euro history to finish in last place in their group with four points. A fate reminiscent of that of Norway during the 1994 World Cup, eliminated from its group behind Mexico, Ireland and Italy while all teams also had four points…
By way of comparison, we can particularly highlight the qualifications, in other groups, of Italy (2nd in group B with four points), Denmark (2nd in group C with three points) or the Netherlands (3rd from group D with four points).
