Tennis. WTA – Berlin – Jessica Pegula overthrows Kalinskaya and is crowned in Berlin

The program for this Sunday at Berlin was special. There should only be the final in theory. Eventually, a semi-final was concluded. Fortunately for the winner, it only lasted… 3 minutes. Jessica Pegula concluded her missing four points to take out her compatriot Coco Gauff. In the final, the suspense was more present. The American emerged victorious in a match with twists and turns against Anna Kalinskaya. Beaten in the first set, Pegula came back before saving five match points in the final set, to win (6-7(0), 6-4, 7-6(3)). The Russian girl Kalinskaya will have to wait to lift her first WTA title.

Kalinskaya cracks the top 20, but harbors regrets

It’s hard not to have a bitter taste after such a scenario. After taking advantage of the withdrawals of Marketa Vondrousova, then Aryna Sabalenka, the Russian Anna Kalinskaya had a clear path to her first WTA title. But at the end of the suspense, she was unable to conclude against Jessica Pegula this Sunday. Physically hampered in the first set, the future 17th player in the world remained focused to take the advantage (7-6(0)). With experience, Pegula came back, but was back against the wall at 2-4 in the 3rd set, the moment chosen by the American to recover her delay. Cruel for Kalinskaya, who lost her second final after Dubai last February. Jessica Pegula lifts her first title on grass, the 5th trophy of her career.
