Pegula in the final in four minutes

Interrupted by rain on Saturday during her semi-final against Coco Gauff, the American Jessica Pegula spent only a few minutes on the court on Sunday lunchtime to eliminate her compatriot. She will face Anna Kalinskaya a little later to try to win the title.

Four minutes. This is the time it took Jessica Pegula to qualify for her first final on grass this Sunday noon. Saturday evening, the rain interrupted her semi-final against Coco Gauff, her compatriot and sometimes doubles partner, while the score was 7-5, 6-6 and 3-1 in the tie-break in her favor. Back on the court, the world No. 5 pounded the No. 2 on her forehand, and Gauff committed four unforced errors in this exercise, sending three forehands into the net and another into the lane to allow Pegula to win the tie-break 7-2, and therefore the matchwhich lasted 1 hour 45 minutes in total.

Pegula now leads 4-1 in her confrontations against Gauff, at the end of this meeting where she was only broken twice: while she was serving to win the first set at 5-4 (she finally won 7-5 following another break at 5-5), and 2-1 in the second set, where she managed to come back to the score by breaking at 5-3. Just before the rain on Saturday, Gauff had missed a set point at 6-5 on his opponent’s serve.

And now, Kalinskaya!

Jessica Pegula (30 years old) will play the very first final of her career on grass, facing Anna Kalinskaya (24th), the girlfriend of Jannik Sinner, in a few dozen minutes.
During their only confrontation, the American won in three sets in Washington in the semi-final in 2019en route to the very first tournament victory of his career.

The Buffalo native is making a great return to competition, having been absent from mid-April to mid-June due to an injury. Interesting a few days before Wimbledon, where she reached the quarter-finals last year, before losing against the future winner, Marketa Vondrousova.
