G7 calls for global truce during Paris Olympics

Lhe seven major economic powers of the G7 have called on all parties engaged in conflicts around the world to observe a truce during the Olympic Games which will take place this summer in Paris.

At the end of the summit of heads of state and government of the Group of Seven, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, whose country holds the presidency of the G7, declared that the entire group was in favor of an end to hostilities during the Games.

This call is included in the summit’s final declaration. The G7 is made up of the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Japan and Canada.

The Olympic Games will begin on July 16 and end on August 11. Ms. Meloni specified that France was at the origin of this proposal for an Olympic truce, “which was welcomed unanimously”.

However, given the many ongoing conflicts, notably in Ukraine, the Middle East and other regions of the world, the realization of this truce seems unlikely.

The tradition of an Olympic truce dates back to the ancient Greek Olympic Games. At the time, a ceasefire was agreed, beginning seven days before the start of the Games and extending for seven days after their conclusion, to ensure the safety of athletes during their travels.
