Servette FCCF – FC Basel Frauen (1-2): Lead in the wing

At Trois-Chêne, Servette lost 2-1 against Basel in a match where, however, they led and dominated their counterparts for almost the entire match. A cruel defeat, a first place lost, but the championship is still long.

What to remember

The Servettians lost their leading position just before the international break. This new misstep comes on top of two other defeats (Saint-Gall and Zürich). Against the top 5 this season, there is only one victory in four games.

The thread of the match

The match started well though. Dominant throughout the first period, the Garnet had opportunities, but without realizing them. In the 8th minute, Mauron failed to open the scoring with a torso deflection. In the 36th minute, Rivelli’s fantastic shot brought the stadium to its feet, but the Basel goalkeeper remained firmly on her feet. We will have to wait until the end of the first period (45+4) to see the Swede Cassandra Korhonen wrap up a magnificent strike at the entrance to the penalty area, thus giving a well-deserved advantage for the Servettiiennes (1-0).

Returning from the locker room, the momentum is still in Geneva, but without any real danger. In the last half hour, the Basel women will return to the match following a loss of the ball by Bourma in the 67th minute, which leaves Finnish goalkeeper Korpela alone against two Basel attackers (1-1). Servette tries to come back, but rushes too much. The Rhinelanders, following a nice combination, scored 1-2 through Ugochukwu.

The turning point of the match

Bourma’s loss of the ball significantly changed the course of the match, but at 1-1, Rimantė Jonusaitė could have restored the advantage. On a low cross in the 73rd minute, the Lithuanian came up against Klink for the first time before the ball came back to her. Unfortunately, the Servetti striker sent her second shot onto the crossbar, while the goalkeeper was already beaten.

Player of the match

Sandrine Mauron : despite the presence of Pia Sundhage in the stands, the Swiss international could not save her team from defeat. But she was able to make a good impression, because she knew how to dictate the tempo in midfield. We are delighted to see Sandrine in the national team during the break and especially on Tuesday October 29 at the Stade de Genève for an enticing Switzerland – match.

And after the break, Servette returned to the championship and hosted Saint-Gall. It’s an important match which can allow the Barcala players to hang up the wagons.
