Remco Evenepoel takes stock of his year: “I deserve a good 9 out of 10”
During his first participation, in 2020, Evenepoel had a terrible fall on the descent of Sormano. Having gone over a low wall, the Belgian fell into the bottom of a ravine, several meters below.
Four years later, the double Olympic champion has warded off fate. In the final meters of this 2024 edition of the Tour of Lombardy, while second place was acquired, Evenepoel wanted to send a moving message to his sports director Davide Bramati: “This 2nd place is for you. You saved my life four years ago.”
The Italian sports director was in fact the first to come to the aid of the Belgian runner after his fall. Evenepoel had recovered with a fractured pelvis. A long revalidation then began to regain his best level a year and a half later.
