Burnley had regained hope in the race to remain in recent weeks. But everything was shattered this afternoon.

With only one defeat in the last eight matches, Burnley seemed to finish the season strong to potentially be able to maintain a still utopian hold this winter. After hanging Manchester United at Old Trafford, the Clarets wanted to do the same against Newcastle.

But the troops of Vincent Kompany fell back on track with a 1-4 defeat. The score already showed a three-goal difference at half-time.

To the achievements of Callum Wilson, Sean Longstaff and Bruno Guimaraes was added that ofAlexander Isak, who also allowed himself the luxury of missing a penalty. Darren O’Shea barely saved the honor at the end of the match.

One slap too many for Burnley?

Four goals in the bag and another bad news for Vincent Kompany: the exit of his defender Maxence Estève, injured just before rest. But the worst is elsewhere with Nottingham Forest’s 1-3 victory in Sheffield.

Nottingham is the first team outside the red zone and therefore openly the target of Burnley at the end of the season. With a five-point gap two days from the end, the mission becomes very complicated for the Clarets.

Let us remember, however, that they will play Nottingham on the last day. Before that, it’s a trip to Tottenham which is on the program next weekend. If Burnley does not win, it will formalize its return to the Championship.
