Yesterday evening at the Stade de Genève, Servette FCCF hosted AS Roma for the return match of the Women’s Champions League play-offs. Trailing 3-1 in the first leg, the Servettians unfortunately did not have a say against the Italians. Despite the 7-2 defeat in torrential rain, the 2,500 children invited by the club and the DIP will have lasting memories.

Banners and smiles were out for grades 5 and 6 at Chêne-Bougeries primary school. Two hours before the start of the second leg of the Women’s Champions League play-off match between Servette and AS Roma, the children aged 9 to 10 had prepared for the occasion. For them, this experience was a great first.

“We can’t wait to discover the stadium”

Under the leadership of DIP and the Grenat club, this class had the chance to be selected to encourage the Swiss Champions, 3 years after their last appearance on the European scene. A project that comes at just the right time according to this teacher, delighted to take his 17 students for the first time.

Despite the apocalyptic weather, the songs were beginning to be felt. Head to the Stade de Genève, always in a good mood. As soon as they arrived in the enclosure, the children’s eyes lit up and fervor took hold of the East Stand, in delirium.

6,107 spectators

But things did not go as planned for José Barcala’s players. Trailing 4 to 1 at half-time, the match already seemed to be over. Not enough to take away the smiles from some big fans. Despite the harsh score inflicted on the Servettians, the young supporters were able to appreciate the magic of football.

Final score 7-2 for the Romans. A result which means the end of the European dream for the Servettians. But the support of 6,100 people, including 2,500 children, gave them a smile again after the meeting. If the children will not see a European Cup again in Geneva this season, the memory of this evening will remain engraved forever.
