It was back-to-school day for the Toronto Maple Leafs on Wednesday and some players were required to attend a media availability, but when it came to forward Mitch Marner, there was no room for compromise.

As the team’s training camp begins, the number 16 is well aware of his contractual situation and journalists have been waiting for him with bated breath. However, the player who will be eligible for full autonomy next summer cut short questions on this subject when he himself gave a brief speech at the start of the game.

“It’s been a good summer and I’m glad to see you again. Of course, there are questions about the contract, but I’m not here to talk about that. As I said, I’m very happy to be a Maple Leaf. It’s a huge privilege. However, I want to talk more about the upcoming season,” he said, adding later that Toronto is his home, the place where he grew up.

Marner said he wants to be the best he can be to help his team during a campaign that promises to be demanding in the Atlantic section.

“We can’t look too far ahead. That’s the problem. You have to be prepared for the ups and downs of a season,” he admitted. “The last few weeks have been enjoyable and we’re excited to start a new journey.”

The 27-year-old skater will complete a six-year, $65.41 million deal. Since joining the NHL in 2016, his production has been up to par during the regular season: last year, he collected 85 points in 69 games. However, he has been criticized for his playoff performances. In the first-round matchup against the Boston Bruins in 2024, the forward had one goal and two assists in seven games.
