This January 5, 2025, as Besançon emerges from an episode of extreme cold, a group of surfers took on the challenge of putting their boards on the Doubs, currently on yellow “flood” alert. An unusual scene to say the least which attracted passers-by.

It's barely 3 p.m. when a group of three or four individuals in surfer outfits dive into the Doubs in Besançon. The few people present on the bank, out to enjoy the sun, rush towards the low wall which separates them from the watercourse in order to observe the scene. This January 5, the climate prevailing in Franche-Comté is however far from being tropical: the territory is emerging from a night of freezing rain and an episode of extreme winter, which caused the mercury to drop to – 33°C in places.

But surfers have waves in their blood. Even without the sea, even without the beach, they always find something to be satisfied with. And thanks to the flow of the Doubs this Sunday, which is in flood yellow vigilance upstream of the Arcier and the Arcier à la Loue, big swirls at the mouth made it possible to create a semblance of a wave. However, the exercise does not seem to be easy, even if the surfer that we can see in our journalist's photos manages to maintain his balance for several minutes!

This is not the first time that surfers have encountered this Bisontine river. As soon as the weather and the level of the Doubs allow it, small groups attempt this unusual meeting, offering an unusual spectacle to the most curious inhabitants.
