Official: Julien Stéphan is no longer the coach of Stade Rennais, an interim trio set up
A year after his return as head coach, Julien Stéphan leaves Stade Rennais, thanked by the club, as do his assistants Denis Zanko and Bouziane Benaraibi. The Sébastien Tambouret trio, assisted by Denis Arnaud and Pierre-Alexandre Lelièvre, take over as interim.
The humiliation suffered at Auxerre was too much. A few days before one year of his return to the head of the Stade Rennes first team, Julien Stéphan sees the adventure end for him on the 10th day of Ligue 1.
Coming to replace Bruno Genesio who left in November 2023, Julien Stéphan will have led the team 32 times in the championship, for 13 victories, 6 draws and 13 defeats during this second cycle, recently marked by a poor series of 5 victories in 18 matches since March last in Ligue 1.
All competitions combined, the technician ends this second one-year Rennes adventure with 20 victories, 6 draws and 17 defeats including an elimination in the Europa League play-offs against AC Milan, and an elimination in the semi-final of the French Cup against PSG.
An interim trio while waiting for the next coach
The club must now work to complete the arrival of Julien Stéphan's successor, and several avenues have been put forward. According to L'Equipe, Jorge Sampaoli would hold the rope, while the Habib Beye-Mathieu Le Scornet track would be waiting. Ouest-France and France Bleu Armorique also mention a Niko Kovac option, who would have had recent contacts with the SRFC.
In the meantime, the bench against Toulouse could be occupied by the trio who will take charge of the first team's training: Sébastien Tambouret (coach of the N3), assisted by his assistant Pierre-Alexandre Lelièvre, but also by Denis Arnaud ( Director of the Academy).
