“They say that rugby is a big family, I no longer believe in it”: Bernard Laporte charges President Grill after the death of Medhi Narjissi

The MHR director and former president of the Federation (FFR) believes that Florian Grill should have resigned.

As the French Rugby Federation (FFR) prepares to appoint its boss on Saturday between the outgoing Florian Grill and the former international Didier Codorniou – an election which comes after a nightmarish summer marked by drama and legal cases – the former president Bernard Laporte (2016-2023), interviewed Thursday at the Exhibition Fair, was scathing towards his successor Florian Grill.

“We will see who will win, but I find it hard to understand that people cling to power with everything that has happened. I believe that, me first of all, if I had been in this situation, I would have left, but hey, everyone does what they want. This is not a criticism.said the current director of rugby at the MHR, traveling to on Friday afternoon.

Stubborn enmity

Bernie refers in particular to the drowning in South Africa of the young resident Medhi Narjissi on August 7, while he was participating in a gathering of the French under-18 team. “This disappearance is terrible”asserts Laporte in a disillusioned tone. We know his terrible enmity towards Grill, to the point of reproaching him – unsurprisingly – for not having resigned.

“I was told that rugby was a big family, I no longer believe that. There are things that shocked me because people party and only think about the election, despite all that. Me , I would have been with the family, I would have taken the plane with the parents to South Africa, that’s the least I could do. I would have said that I have nothing more to do in this position. “There, that I am not primarily responsible, even if that is not true. From the moment you are the boss, you have to take responsibility for things.”commented the MHR liegeman.

As for the candidate Didier Codorniou, ex-Little Prince of French rugby, Laporte, without expressly supporting him, nevertheless seems to give him his endorsement. “I played against him a little bit. I’m not saying he’s a friend, I don’t know him well, but he’s someone I like.” The latest polls gave Florian Grill the favorite. Verdict of the election this Saturday noon.
