Faced with Donald Trump, Dominique de Villepin warns Europe

With the arrival of Donald Trump in power, Europe is moving “from ally status to vassal status”observes Dominique de Villepin. Former Prime Minister assures that America’s allies are “at the time of submission, of vassalization, of diktat”. He calls on Europeans to “be independent militarily and technologically” to face the “trumpism”.

Dominique de Villepin is worried about the “revolution” Trumpist which he defines as a “formidable brutalisation”and “unlimited productivism” et “an extractivism”. The former Prime Minister also warns against this “technological revolution in progress” with the big ones “techno-entrepreneurs, starting with Elon Musk” who now stand alongside the 47th American president. “Because there is this technological revolution that accompanies it, it gives the feeling that nothing can stop it”believes Dominique de Villepin.

“Recognition of a Palestinian state is the starting point”

“The recognition of a Palestinian state is the starting point for a new regional order and a new international order”argues Dominique de Villepin. Former Prime Minister assures that Hamas cannot “not be eradicated by force alone”. He calls on Israelis, Palestinians and regional and international communities “to show boldness and imagination to offer everyone a perspective, a hope”favoring the political solution.

“Things could have been resolved much earlier”deplores Dominique de Villepin the day after the release of the first three Israeli hostages as part of the ceasefire agreement concluded 15 months after the start of the war between Israel and Hamas. “It is too early to take responsibility and history will do its work”however, judges the former Prime Minister.

France / Algeria: “There is the temptation to indulge in settling scores”

For the former Prime Minister, this is the most serious crisis between France and Algeria since the war, it is therefore necessary “show great composure”. Dominique de Villepin denounces “position punitive” and one “politics of the worst” : “We have paid dearly enough through history to learn that there is only one path, that of friendship, that of respect and I very much hope so, of reconciliation because our people deserve it”.

The former Prime Minister does not give his position on the possible calling into question of the Franco-Algerian agreements of 1968 (agreements which grant a special status to Algerian nationals in particular on their conditions of movement, stay and employment in France) , after the remarks of the Minister of the Interior Bruno Retailleau on Sunday January 19, but for Dominique de Villepin, “if we wish to re-discuss these agreements, let’s talk about it with the Algerians”.
