This is a shock announcement from Mark Zuckerberg: the removal of the fact-checking system on Facebook and Instagram. “We will return to our roots and focus on reducing errors, simplifying our policies and restoring free speech on our platforms,” the Meta director said in a video on Tuesday. He added: “Specifically, we will get rid of fact-checkers and replace them with community ratings similar to X, starting with the United States.”
This is thus a major policy change for Meta. Its fact-checking system (fact checking) was launched in 2016. The group filtered the information published on its platforms by third-party fact-checkers certified by the International Fact-Checking Network and the European Fact-Checking Standards Network. As NBC recalled on Tuesday, the program included more than 90 organizations that fact-checked in more than 60 languages. In the United States, these include groups such as PolitiFact and Factcheck.org.
