Boat stranded in the St. Lawrence: the refloating operation began Tuesday morning

Another attempt to refloat the boat which ran aground on Christmas Eve in the St. Lawrence River near Verchères is planned for Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.

The information was confirmed by the Canadian Department of Fisheries and Oceans, which specifies in its update that “unloading operations in the second barge were completed during the night”.

“As a result, the refloating specialist, from the company SMIT Salvage, informed us of an attempt to refloat the vessel this morning,” Fisheries and Oceans Canada indicated in an email to the QMI Agency.

More than 3,000 tons of corn were unloaded from the two barges, paving the way for the ship’s refloating operation, which was scheduled to resume on 1is January after the failure of a first attempt at the end of December.

A widespread power outage would be the cause, but the federal authorities have still not given details on the origin of this outage, which has immobilized the freight boat in the waters of the St. Lawrence River for two weeks. .
