Imagine a country where foreign visitors far outnumber locals, turning its cities, beaches and countryside into magnets for travelers. In 2024, Croatia welcomed more than 21.3 million tourists, an impressive figure for a nation of just 4 million people. With its postcard landscapes, its rich heritage and a strategy focused on sustainability, the country is breaking affluence records. But behind these figures, Croatia hides a fascinating story of transformation and ambition. Discover how this European gem became a must-see destination.

Record figures for an exceptional year

In 2024, Croatia reached a historic milestone with 108.7 million overnight stays recorded, up 1% compared to the previous year. If the Adriatic coast remains the star with 103.3 million overnight stays, the hinterland surprised with its dynamic growth. Cities like Zagreb, the capital, saw a notable increase of 6%, reaching 2.7 million overnight stays. These results reflect a diversification of the tourist offer, with a growing attraction for cultural and natural stays, far from crowded beaches.

The Ministry of Tourism attributes this performance to an ambitious strategy: expanding the tourist season beyond the summer months. Thus, the spring and autumn periods now see a significant influx of visitors, confirming Croatia as an attractive destination all year round.

Constantly increasing income

Croatian tourism performance is not limited to the number of visitors. The economic benefits are just as impressive. Between January and September 2024, revenue generated by foreign tourists reached 13.2 billion euros, according to the Croatian central bank. This 1.7% increase reflects quality tourism, driven by visitors with high purchasing power.

This financial windfall is partly explained by efforts to promote the treasures of the hinterland. Historical sites, natural parks and authentic experiences are highlighted, offering an alternative to the crowded beaches of the Adriatic. This strategy allows the country to diversify its sources of income and better distribute tourist activity throughout the territory.

A strategy focused on sustainability

Faced with the massive influx of visitors, Croatia is focusing on a more sustainable and balanced tourism model. The objective is to preserve its natural and cultural heritage while capitalizing on the enthusiasm of travelers. The promotion of off-season stays is a key example, helping to limit pressure on infrastructure in high season.

In addition, the authorities are investing in modern and eco-responsible infrastructure, particularly in transport and accommodation. These efforts reinforce Croatia’s image as a destination that is both popular and respectful of its environment.

Croatia: an essential European destination

With its sparkling beaches, bustling cities and breathtaking hinterland, Croatia is establishing itself as a rising star of European tourism. Its impressive figures for 2024 confirm its growing attractiveness among travelers seeking landscapes, culture and authenticity.

As the country continues to invest in its tourism sector and adapt to new trends, it appears destined to play a leading role on the global stage. Croatia is no longer content with attracting summer vacationers: it is now a veritable tourist magnet all year round.
