After an hour’s interview this Monday with the environmentalist president Alexander Van der Bellen, the leader of the far-right FPÖ party, Herbert Kickl, came out all smiles, contenting himself with a brief comment: “With him, it’s always good discussions.” Ironic? Just a few months ago, Herbert Kickl described the president as a “senile mummy”, in his usual provocative style. The two men hardly liked each other and there is no doubt that the environmentalist president would have wanted to avoid tasking Herbert Kickl with starting negotiations with a view to forming a government.

But, this Monday, he no longer had a choice and resolved to do it, recognizing that making such a decision “was not easy”. Herbert Kickl should now invite the conservatives to talks in order to form a coalition together.
