Hadi al-Bahra, head of the Syrian National Coalition, told Xinhua on Saturday that he hoped that the upcoming national dialogue conference in Syria would meet public expectations by representing all components of the Syrian people.

DAMASCUS, Jan. 4 (Xinhua) — Hadi al-Bahra, head of the Syrian National Coalition, told Xinhua on Saturday that he hopes the upcoming national dialogue conference in Syria will meet public expectations by representing all components of the Syrian people.

Although there are no detailed plans yet for the conference, it should be given “sufficient time to produce significant results”, according to Mr al-Bahra.

As for recent visits by officials from Western and Arab countries to Syria, al-Bahra said they show that “the international community wants to ensure that things in Syria proceed in accordance with the aspirations of the Syrian people.”

These visits also show that foreign governments “seek to protect their interests” and prevent Syria from “going down a wrong path that would threaten security and stability in the region”, he added.

A military coalition led by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) launched a major offensive from northern Syria on November 27, 2024, seizing Damascus and toppling the government of former President Bashar al-Assad. space of 12 days.

In late December 2024, Ahmed al-Charaa, head of HTS and de facto ruler of Syria, announced that all armed factions, including HTS, would disband “in due time”, saying that the new Syrian authority “will manage the countries with a state-centric approach” rather than a revolutionary philosophy. This restructuring should be accompanied by a national dialogue conference and the creation of a Ministry of Defense.

The Syrian National Coalition is an alliance of opposition groups formed in exile after the 2011 uprising against Bashar al-Assad.
