Fever and headache? Muscle pain, cough and sore throat? These are indeed symptoms indicative of the flu.

“A terrible, horrible cough. I’m really congested,” said Michael Robert, who contracted the flu.

“I don’t have a fever, but I have a sinus headache that won’t go away. And there is a limit to the amount of Advil you can take in a day. So I’ve spent most of the last 24 hours in bed.

Doctors say if a person has painful but tolerable symptoms, it’s likely a bad cold and recommend avoiding emergency rooms.

“For example if you have a fever, but it is not very high. If you are congested. If you are sneezing and coughing but do not have chest pain. If you are not out of breath. And if you have mild muscle pain,” reported Dr. Mitch Shulman.

Health officials advise against unnecessary visits because doctors will likely send the patient home with Tylenol unless they have a preexisting condition.

“If you are very young (less than a year old, two years old or older) or have underlying health conditions like diabetes or kidney disease, heart disease or lung disease, these are the people who “probably need to be seen as soon as possible in a clinic, doctor’s office or emergency room, or at least call 811,” Dr. Shulman said.
