A magnitude 5.5 earthquake shook northern Ethiopia on Friday, where a volcano erupted after months of accumulated seismic activity, reported the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center (CSEM) and local media.

No injuries have yet been reported.

The magnitude 5.5 quake occurred at a depth of about ten kilometers at 8:01 p.m. local time (5:01 p.m. GMT), 55 kilometers northwest of the town of Asbe Teferi, near the border between the regions of Afar and Oromia, specifies the CSEM.

According to local media, a volcano has also erupted in the area, after months of building up seismic activity.

A local official, Aden Bela, told the EBC television channel that the volcano’s eruption occurred at 5:30 a.m. Friday (02:30 GMT) in the locality of Segento, in the Dulecha district of the Afar region. . .

According to this official, the smoke from the volcano has stopped but the lava continues to flow. Livestock and people were displaced, he said, without giving figures.

Since late September, the United States Institute of Geophysics (USGS) has recorded more than 67 earthquakes in the region, mainly concentrated in the Fantale region, part of the main Ethiopian Rift Valley, the Addis Standard newspaper reported.
