Karin Keller-Sutter: “Switzerland is strong and has the capacity to act.”

In Switzerland, the start of the year begins with two immutable traditions. First of all, the publication of the new photo of the Federal Council, then the speech by the President of the Confederation. In 2025, Karin Keller-Sutter will be at the head of the country. A first for the Minister of Finance. And for her speech on January 1, she chose to speak from the Abbey of Saint-Gall. It is still a tradition, presidents often choose a symbolic place in their canton of origin to make their wishes to the population.

In a rather brief speech, the PLR magistrate first took a look in the rearview mirror: “Once again, the past year has been eventful.” Realistically, she added: “I would like to tell you that the next year will be calmer. But I don’t know any more than you do what 2025 will be like.”

Very attached to the Swiss political system

Despite the uncertainties, Saint-Galloise wants to be optimistic. She believes in her country. “On the other hand, I know that we can approach the new year with confidence. Switzerland is strong and has the capacity to act.” She underlined the humility of the Swiss population: “Direct democracy works in part thanks to this quality.” The Federal Councilor’s attachment to Swiss institutions is widely known and she was keen to recall certain sometimes forgotten values by emphasizing the importance of recognizing and accepting the demands of others. “It’s the compromise that often makes it possible to find solutions likely to garner a majority.”

She was delighted that the country’s democracy and the rule of law were functioning, praising the sense of community of the Swiss. “We can find solutions,” declared the Minister of Finance. Each of us has a role to play in this common project. And this also applies to 2025,” concluded the new President of the Confederation, aware that she will have to face many challenges both internally and externally.
