This incident occurs in a fragile context, after the end of the civil war in November 2022 which caused tens of thousands of victims and left the region in a situation of great instability.

Three Ethiopian journalists investigating suspected illegal gold mines in Ethiopia’s troubled Tigray region were kidnapped by unknown assailants before being released hours later, regional television said on Sunday.

According to Tigré , the three men, who have not been identified, were in the Asgede district when they were “abducted by unknown persons in unclear circumstances”.

A few hours later, a journalist from this media, Abel Tsgabu, told AFP that they had been released and that they were going “ GOOD ”, without giving further details.

In November 2022, in the regional state of Tigray, a peace agreement put an end to a deadly war, marked by numerous abuses, between the federal government, supported by regional forces, and the regional authorities who had entered into rebellion.

During the war, at least 600,000 people were killed, according to an estimate by the African Union envoy for the Horn of Africa, Olusegun Obasanjo. Federal authorities had blocked all humanitarian aid to the region, and suspended banking services, telecommunications and air links.
