“Glicked” phenomenon at the box office: “Gladiator 2” stronger than “Wicked” in Quebec

As expected, the “Glicked” phenomenon dominated the Quebec box office last weekend. But unlike our neighbors to the South, this is the film Gladiator 2 who got the better of the musical Wicked.

According to data compiled by the Cinéac agency, Gladiator 2 was the most popular film in theaters in the province, with a collection of $957,463 for its first three days in theaters. Wickedan adaptation of the musical comedy of the same title created in 2003, ranks second on the charts with receipts of $738,169.

This is the opposite scenario of what happened in the United States and the rest of Canada, where Wicked largely dominated Gladiator 2raking in $114 million in three days (compared to $55.5 million for the sequel to Ridley Scott’s cult film).

In total, the “Glicked” phenomenon – the nickname given to the simultaneous release of these two highly anticipated films – will have generated revenues of nearly $170 million during its opening weekend at the North American box office. It is much less than the phenomenon from which it is inspired, “Barbenheimer” (for Barbie et Oppenheimer), which raised $240 million during its first three days in theaters, in the summer of 2023.

Quebec is doing well

Despite the arrival in theaters of these Hollywood blockbusters, Quebec cinema continues to do well this fall. In its third weekend in theaters, the family comedy The Christmas cyclone remains in the top 3 of the most popular films in Quebec theaters and to date has accumulated revenues of more than $1.5 million.

Released about ten days ago, the film Shepherds is in fifth place and has just surpassed the $500,000 revenue mark.
