While OM has found its coach in Roberto De Zerbi, the Phocéens must now get active in the transfer window to recruit players who match the coach’s style of play. Although OM is interested in Mason Greenwood, the transfer could fall through.

After a disappointing end to the season for Marseille, it is time to rebuild the squad. Several departures have already been recorded: Ndiaye, Pape Gueye, Vitinha and the club is active on all fronts. Yesterday, The Athletic revealed OM’s interest in Mason Greenwood, the Manchester United striker. However, his arrival is not unanimous among supporters.

A talented but controversial player

Aged only 22, the player, trained at Manchester United, made a thunderous debut during the 2019/2020 season. In his first season with the professionals, Greenwood scored 17 goals in 49 matches. Statistics which made him one of the greatest hopes in English football. The striker then confirmed his talent during his second season before disappearing from the radar in January 2022. The player was removed from the team after being accused of domestic violence by his partner. She had posted photos of the blows the player received on social media.

We will have to wait until the 2023/2024 season to see him play again for Getafe, where he will score 10 goals and make 6 assists. Although the case was dropped, his innocence was never declared. The past continues to follow Greenwood since Manchester United no longer want him to play in their colours. Rumors of a possible arrival from Marseille also do not please the club’s supporters, who created the hashtag #GreenwoodNotWelcome. The message is clear: the player would receive a hostile reception in the Marseille city if he were to join the club.

If Marseille wants to afford the player, the club will have to pay an amount estimated at more than €40 million. Despite a good season with Getafe, it is not sure that the player is the best option to strengthen OM’s offensive sector.
