The architectural agency in charge of the renovation of the Salève cable car in Geneva has just received a prestigious award.
The rehabilitation of the upper station of the Salève cable car won the Equerre d’Argent, a prestigious French architecture prize. Two years of work were necessary to renovate the two stations of this facility which was put into service in 1932.
Designed by Geneva architect Maurice Braillard, the arrival station, classified as a historic monument in 2018, has been completely rehabilitated. The concrete facade was restored and the gallery regained its original essence with its checkerboard tiles on the floor.
New spaces have been developed, such as a seminar room and a belvedere at the top of the station. The restaurant at an altitude of 1,100 meters, which offers a panoramic view of the Lake Geneva basin, opened its doors last October.
The work, which was carried out between August 2021 and September 2023, amounted to more than 13 million euros. The technical installations were not affected, as they had already been replaced in 2013-2014. The facility transports approximately 300,000 users per year to and from the “Montagne des Genevois”.
After the A10+1 Architecture Prize, this victory at the Equerre d’Argent confirms the quality of the project and its impact for the territory of Greater Geneva, indicated Tuesday the local cross-border cooperation group for the operation of the cable car of the Saleve. The Devaux & Devaux agency, which led this project, made this rehabilitation a collective success, adds the Group. (sda/ats)
