In an era where artificial intelligence is now the last resort for citizens, especially young people, distrust and verification are urgent more than ever. The Union of Small Press Enterprises (UPEP) recently launched a call for vigilance with regard to unverified visual content circulating on certain Moroccan websites.
In a press release, UPEP expressed its growing concerns over the worrying rise of manipulated videos and images, using artificial intelligence technologies, which convey false information.
This alert comes at a time of several reports of the dissemination of digital content aimed at damaging the image of the Kingdom of Morocco and its sovereign symbols. According to the said press release, “These falsified videos and images appear to be part of a broader campaign aimed at undermining Morocco’s interests, serving hostile agendas and creating a climate of confusion among public opinion.”.
UPEP insisted on the need for great professional rigor in the management of visual and written content. She reminded publication directors and journalists of the importance of checking the credibility of information before any dissemination, emphasizing that national responsibility and ethics must take precedence in the exercise of their profession.
In the same vein, UPEP called on digital media players to refrain from publishing or relaying any questionable information that could harm the country’s image or promote external interests. She particularly insisted on the importance of respecting the ethical principles of the profession, such as verifying sources and being cautious about content likely to inflame public opinion.
Furthermore, UPEP encouraged publication directors to promptly report any suspicious content to the relevant authorities in order to stem the spread of such false information. The objective is to limit the risks of manipulation and disinformation, which can have serious consequences, both nationally and internationally.
In its press release, the Union also expressed the need to maintain constant vigilance in the face of the rise in the use of artificial intelligence in the creation of manipulated digital content. By calling for collective awareness, she insisted on the importance of protecting Morocco’s reputation and fighting against all forms of disinformation likely to harm national causes.
