Supercomputers: Alps loses its European crown

The world ranking of supercomputers is now dominated by El Capitan (USA). In Europe, the Italian HPC6 overtakes the Swiss Alps, which is now in 7th place.

The TOP500 ranking of the most powerful supercomputers on the planet has been updated. Swiss flagship in this field, Alps, officially launched on September 14, rose to 7th place. It loses one place compared to the list published last June.

Alps, an HPE Cray EX254n system developed by CSCS, equipped with an NVIDIA Grace 72C chip and an NVIDIA GH200 chip, is also no longer the most powerful in Europe. The HPC6, installed at the Eni SpA center in Ferrera Erbognone in Italy, is in 5th place. This is another HPE Cray EX235a system equipped with 3rd generation AMD EPYC™ CPUs optimized for HPC and AI. The Italian system reaches 477.9 petaflop/s, compared to 434.90 PFlop/s for its Alpine rival. Note that the latter has gained power since June (it then reached 270 PFlop/s).

The TOP500 also has a new leader. At the top of the list is the aptly named El Capitan, from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (California, United States). This HPE Cray EX255a system was measured at 1.742 Exaflop/s. The previous leader, the Frontier system from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, USA, slipped to second place (with a power of 1.353 Exaflop/s).
