In the midst of a crisis in the automotive industry, the CEO of the Stellantis group, Carlos Tavares, is expected this Monday, November 18 at the La Janais site. His visit comes in a context of uncertainty for the Breton site, because the drop in volumes of the C5 Aircross leads to the elimination of 250 temporary contracts on January 1, 2025.

Carlos Tavares is at the Janais factory this Monday afternoon. The CEO of the Stellantis group must notably visit the two new plastic injection and shoeing workshops set up to accommodate the new CR3 electric vehicle, production of which will begin in the summer. The company will only produce this type of vehicle for around six years, which worries staff representatives and unions, whom the CEO must meet. For them the priority is employment, and the Rennes site will record the departure of 250 temporary contracts on January 1, 2025.

A mono-production feared by the unions

Valentin Monnier joined Laurent Valy, CFDT secretary of CSE Stellantis Rennes. “We find ourselves since October with the discontinuation of the 5 008 with a single product – the C5 Aircross. We are at the end of the vehicle's life and it is becoming complicated. We see this on January 1 with the end of temporary contracts, numbering 250. We can clearly see that the risk of partial activity is significant for the first half of the year…and then, we will resume activity, this opens up perspectives for us, but we find ourselves in a zone of discomfort with a single product. This is what does not suit us at CFDT: we want a second product, another vehicle project to be produced on the Rennes – La Janais site.”

It's a risky bet for the unions because if sales are not good, there will be a direct impact on employment. “OHe's just going to tell Carlos Tavares, indicates Laurent Valy, that he must show his cards. We have met him several times and what is important for us are perspectives on the future.

It must reassure us about the future, and get us out of this zone of discomfort

It is important that he matches words with actions. He has an idea that only performance protects. The Rennes site is efficient, in terms of safety, quality, quantity, cost price, etc. It must reassure us about the future, take us out of this zone of discomfort, and provide us with a complementary vehicle at the Rennes site.”
