The devastating fire that ravaged a residence at the intersection of 8th Avenue and 120th Street this Friday evening is now the subject of a thorough investigation.
While firefighters handed over to Sûreté du Québec investigators during the night, specialized technicians are examining the scene to determine the causes of the disaster and trying to locate two people still missing.
Since this morning, a major crimes investigator and a fire scene technician from the Sûreté du Québec have been on site. Their mission is to determine the exact origin of the fire and to check if any victims are among the rubble.
The director of the Saint-Georges Fire Safety Service, Frédéric Morin, indicated that his team left the scene at 3:45 a.m. this Saturday, after securing the perimeter. “ We handed over to the Sûreté du Québec for the continuation of the investigation. We await their conclusions to confirm our hypotheses “, he added.
As a reminder, the fire, reported around 4:50 p.m., quickly transformed into a real fireball. Visible several kilometers away, it required a massive intervention by firefighters to prevent spread to neighboring buildings, in particular the Tapis Venture factory, a building housing dangerous products, and a warehouse located behind it.
Witnesses reported a loud explosion just before the fire ignited, a hypothesis reinforced by the potential presence of propane or other flammable substances. However, no definitive conclusions have yet been made on this matter. Firefighters are awaiting the results of the police investigation to confirm their initial observations.
