Faced with an increase in social plans in companies, Prime Minister Michel Barnier announced on Thursday, November 14, that he wanted to set up a “task force” to support employees who were victims of layoffs.
Closures of business sites and other social plans and restructuring follow one another but are not the same. After Michelin and Auchan, it is the turn of Valeo, Vencorex and Arkema to sideline many employees. Faced with growing concerns among the French, Prime Minister Michel Barnier wants to create a coordinated system in all ministries to best support workers.
In an interview given to the daily newspaper Ouest-France, Michel Barnier notably indicated: “I know, having been a local elected official for a long time, how each restructuring, each business failure is a tragedy for so many families, for an entire region.” Wanting to act as a priority on this issue, he also announced: “We are setting up a 'task force' between all the ministers concerned (Labour, Industry, Finance, Budget, etc.) to provide rapid responses to each particular situation.”
A “task force” for what objectives?
This task force will, according to the head of government, be responsible for “to support, dialogue with companies, ensure that they find retraining solutions for their employees […] and look for buyers for the sites.”Questioned by André Chassaigne (PCF) at the National Assembly the day after the announcement of the social plan at Michelin and Auchan, Michel Barnier indicated that he was requesting an audit of the aid granted to the Mulliez group. The government also announced that it would not request reimbursement of aid in the event of misuse of public money.
