In brief:
  • Roy Haynes has died aged 99.
  • He collaborated with Lester Young and other jazz legends.
  • His career spanned from swing to bop and beyond.
  • He was renowned for his subtle and musical approach.

Two days ago there still lived on this earth someone who had accompanied Lester Young – the Prez! – for two years… Roy Haynes died on Tuesday November 12 at the very respectable age of 99, closely following his contemporary the saxophonist Lou Donaldson.

Bad times for old jazzmen since we still have to take into account the recent disappearances of Benny Golson and of Quincy Jones. With the latter, the man nicknamed “Snap Crackle” in the fifties recorded the split album “Jazz Abroad”.

A great 20th century

Among the great drummers of the second half of the 20th century, Roy Haynes did not forge a very assertive percussive style but rather brushed a subtle, accompanying and musical approach that could adapt to all kinds of environments. The list of his collaborations stands out as one of the most impressive in the history of jazz, to the point of being confused with it.

After Young, he held the drums for Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Stan Getz, to name just a few, cut out of mythology, and which he remembered with joy the year he came to Lausanne , at the Jazz Onze+ festival, in 2005, the year of his 80th birthday.

Backstage at the Lausanne event, he still exuded youthful enthusiasm and was quick to show his latest watch to the visitor

Legendary partners

The list of his glorious partners was endless and included singer Sarah Vaughan, who greatly appreciated him, Bud Powell, Miles Davis, Lee Konitz, Eric Dolphy, Gary Burton and so many others.

His long career had in no way caused him to lose his proverbial flexibility and he had jumped nimbly from swing to bop, without forgetting to rub shoulders with more modern extensions of the great delta jazz, alongside Chick Corea, Michel Petrucciani or Pat Metheny . Quick, inventive, sensitive, a drummer desired by all champions.
